Directions

From Cougar, WA go three miles east on highway 503 and turn right onto an unmarked road. Stay to the right and cross a bridge, then stay to the left and follow this rough gravel road for 1 1/2 miles. Turn right and follow this gravel road for 2.5 miles. Take the road to the right and go less than a quarter mile to the trailhead.

Trail Description

This steep but short hike offers views of cascade volcanoes Mt. St. Helens, Rainier, Adams, and Hood. In season wildflowers are abundant, especially Bear Grass.

The first two miles climbs steeply through a dense forest of second growth, which you will appreciate on a hot summer day. The view is unobstructed on the open half mile to the rocky summit of Mt. Mitchell.

Comments

We went up on 7/9/06. Trail is well-maintained and uncrowded. The beargrass is done blooming but the views remain spectacular!
