December Hikes Near Portland

Return to Message Board

I am looking for some early-winter hikes to do around Portland. I am hoping to avoid the Gorge, and potentially a low-lying area to stay out of the snow. Any suggestions?

If you hurry, you can probably still hike out the Salmon River, but I hear snow levels are dropping and we may be getting some low elevation snow here in a few days. The trail stays below 3,000 feet for most of the trail, and it is a pretty nice trail.
Eagle Creek (not the gorge) near Estacada would probably make a good trip. It stays mostly under 2000 feet. The Lower Lewis River is also a pretty low elevation trail. I believe it's maximum elevation is around 2,500 feet. Also check out the Trapper Creek Wilderness just north of Carson.
