Backpacking in Tillamook SF

Return to Message Board

Does anyone have any recommendations for a good backpacking loop (preferably) in Tillamook State forest? Just looking for an overnight this time, but if you know a great 3 or 4 day trip lemme know! Can you pretty much camp anywhere out there, or do you have to stick to established sites? Thanks!

The Gorge loop, if that's what you're asking about... was from the Eagle Creek parking lot, up the Ruckle Creek Trail (the trailhead is about a half mile east along the Columbia River Gorge Trail that runs east/west... head into the car campground and you'll pick it up). We went up Ruckle Creek to Benson Plateau, then linked up with the PCT to Whatum lake, then back on the Eagle Creek trail. It was quite nice. Steep on day one, but the rest was smooth sailin. Took our time and did a 4 day trip, but could be done in 2. Doesn't get too crowded until you pass tunnel falls on eagle creek on the way out.

This is still on my radar, but opted for a loop in the Gorge instead. I'll post whatever I find out when I do decide to head west!

Well you could make your own trip... although unconventional :-) I would start with the wilson River trail.... hike up king or elk mt... depending on your direction camp at lees camp and elk creek campground.... check with the ranger station about off site camping which may not be allowed right now... but may be possible earier or later in the year as these hikes usually dont have snow too long! Good luck and let me know what you end up doing jess

I'll keep you posted. Its gorgeous out there and doesn't seem terribly crowded so it'd be great to find some nice spots... Plus the fishing there ain't bad!

I wish I did know of some good areas. I'm not sure what the camping regulations are there, you'll probably need to check with the Tillamook State Forest. Let me know if you find anything, you've gotten my curiosity up!

I was afraid of that... I'm mostly just looking to get in some of those hikes, but don't particularly want to stay at a campground. What are the State Forest rules regarding backcountry camping? Know any nice spots?

You'll probably have a hard time finding a backpacking trip in the Tillamook State Forest. There are a couple good day hikes, but I don't think backpacking options really exist. Of course I would love for someone to prove me wrong...
